Avery's Handmade Elsa Halloween Costume (a year late)

With last week’s heat wave behind us—and a pleasant nip in that San Diego air—it’s beginning to feel a lot like Autumn. Avery and I are plotting this year’s Halloween look, and have narrowed it down to Sisu from Raya and the Last Dragon or… ZOMBIE. I’m trying to convince her that we should dress up as a family as the ZomB-52’s, but both the pun and 80’s musical references are understandably lost on her. At any rate, it occurred to me that I never shared last year’s costume on the blog. So here’s some Halloween inspiration for ya, courtesy of a hacked McCalls pattern, 10+ hours of work, and a whole lot of sequins.

Pattern

I accidentally ordered the adult sized Elsa costume pattern from Etsy, so I just kind of eyeballed the whole thing. I self-drafted the skirt (a simple A-line) and sized the bodice down significantly, then used a long-sleeve teeshirt pattern for the mesh top (I already had that in a children’s’ size, fortunately).

Snowflakes

I made the snowflakes out of fusible interfacing using the ol’ folded triangle method. Once attached to the netting, I added a layer of glitter paint for good measure.

Shoes

For the shoes, I covered a pair of ballet flats with the same sequin fabric that I used for the bodice, and created bias tape out of the remaining satin. Hot glue did the trick for this one!
